Firms threaten exodus over workplace parking levy

Businesses have threatened to leave Nottingham if the city council imposes its controversial workplace parking levy.

The local chamber of commerce has warned two out of three of its members would think seriously about leaving the city if the council went ahead with the proposal.

Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce claimed a survey of its members showed more than 60% would consider moving out of the city.

A spokesman for the chamber said: ‘I don’t think the city council actually believes us. It is something that will drive businesses out of the city and is a concern for us, but it doesn’t seem to be a concern for the city council.’

But the city council has made it plain that money raised by the levy would go towards important improvements to local transport and without it, these might not go ahead.

The parking levy is expected to raise £67M towards the city’s tram extension, £10M to help redevelop the city’s railway station, and up to £3M for the city’s Link bus network which connects outlying districts with major employers, hospitals and universities.
