Firms’ support for ‘cycle to work’ idea

The Department for Transport has revealed that more than 70 public and private sector organisations will implement its new ‘cycle to work’ guarantee, which will see the firms provide safe bike storage and changing facilities for staff.

The scheme will also enable access to the Government’s tax break scheme to support staff wanting to buy a new bike or cycling equipment.

Transport secretary, Lord Adonis, said: ‘If proper facilities were more widely available, I believe far more people would cycle to work. At present, only 3% do so. We could double or treble that figure with proper bike storage and changing facilities.’

Participating employers will also provide bike repair for cyclists on-site or near to places of work, and introduce new training, and reward and incentive programmes to boost cycling numbers.
