Firms shortlisted for £3bn contracts

Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority has announced shortlists for three new waste management contracts worth a combined £3bn.

A shortlist of 15 applicants has been announced for the energy-from-waste resource recovery contract (RRC), with the winning bidder primarily responsible for the development of residual waste facilities.

Four bidders have been shortlisted for the waste management and recycling contract (WMRC), which will manage the region’s 14 household waste recycling centres and the transport of waste to landfill, and eight bidders have been shortlisted for the interim ‘stop gap’ contract.

Contract agreements for the WMRC and interim contracts are due to take effect from 2008, and the RRC contract in 2009.

Cllr Kevin Cluskey, chairman of MWDA, said: ‘This is the first step in a major drive to boost the region’s facilities for handling waste and increasing levels of recycling. If Merseyside doesn’t decrease what it is sending to landfill, then we could face fines from the Government.’

The four shortlisted companies for the WMRC contract are: Shanks, SITA UK, Veolia ES Aurora, and Waste Recycling Group – all of which are among the 15 shortlisted companies for the RRC contract.
