A review of pedestrian crossings along Sheffield’s tram network is under way, after a safety watchdog ruled that a fence might have contributed to a fatal accident by obscuring a driver’s view. The Railway Accident Investigation Branch found the positioning of a parapet fence, separating the tramway from the footway, prevented a tram driver from seeing a pedestrian until he was 30m away, leaving insufficient time to break or warn the man with the tram’s horn. Tram operator Stagecoach Supertram,
~Sheffield City Council~ and
South Yorkshire Police, have started discussions on replacing the fence, which was designed to restrict pedestrians from crossing the track. Meanwhile, compulsory audible warnings have been introduced at the crossing, as an interim measure. Stagecoach Supertram has also ‘identified a number of locations where similar conditions exist’ and where it might make changes.
