Fears for safety of Severn crossing bring heavyweight response

Weight restrictions have been announced following the discovery of corrosion on the M48 Severn Bridge.
From 6 November, only vehicles weighing up to 7.5t can use lane two of the bridge as part of a precautionary measure.
According to the Highways Agency, these restrictions should only affect a small number of heavy goods vehicles and do not restrict those weighing up to 44t from using lane one in either direction.
Chris Pope, route performance manager for the agency, said: ‘The restriction will reduce the potential overall weight of traffic on the bridge and minimise the risk of further deterioration of the cables.
‘We are continuing the investigation of the cables. When testing is complete and all of the investigation results are known, we will take the necessary steps to maintain the structure.’
