Extra £10.8m bill if PCT cuts go ahead

Brent councillors have warned council taxpayers face an extra bill of £10.8m if the local teaching Primary Care Trust presses ahead with plans to cut services.
Council leader, Paul Lorber, has called for an urgent meeting with health secretary, Patricia Hewitt, to discuss the impact of plans unveiled by Brent tPCT in November to cut its budgets by £14.2m this financial year and by £31m in 2007-08. Initially, officials had estimated that it would cost some £9m for the council to take over the running of key services, but now that figure has been revised to £10.8m. Cllr Lorber said: ‘We simply do not have the resources, even with a maximum 5% increase in council tax next year, to fund services previously provided by the tPCT.’
