Executive pounds private firms with junior discount

The Passenger Transport Executive, which bus operators successfully appealed against over concessionary fares last year, has launched a new cut-price battle with the private sector.

Greater Manchester is undercutting the bus operators’ System One Junior ticket for unlimited weekly travel by schoolchildren by one pound.

The £6 pass will only be available on about 300 school bus services, which are run on a cost-reimbursement basis, with the operator returning to GMPTE all the revenues collected. It will only be valid for journeys to and from school each day on designated services.

The System One Junior ticket, which allows the holder an unlimited number of bus journeys for a week, was increased by 20% to £7 last year, when the standard concessionary fare was increased by 40%, from 50p to 70p.

The increase was needed because of GMPTA’s budget crisis brought on by the bus operator’s successful appeal to the DfT, which ruled that the PTA had not handed over enough money to pay for free fares for over-60s. That decision left the authority almost £8M short.
