The number of public transport trips made in Tyne and Wear in 2008 rose by 7.1M compared with the previous year, it has been revealed.
Figures released by Tyne and Wear Passenger Executive showed more than 183M journeys were made in 2008. The organisation claimed this rise was brought on by service improvements and rising fuel prices. It added that the 4.1% increase in public transport use reduced car journeys by 53M vehicle-kilometres in the county over the course of the year.
Cllr David Wood, chairman of the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority, said: ‘The strong growth in bus use we have seen in the last few years is positive news for the whole region.
‘Increased public transport use is good for air quality and the environment, and helps reduce congestion.’
