English recycling on a high with rise of 3%

England’s household recycling rate increased to 33.9% in 2007, while less waste was sent to landfill, new government figures reveal.

The household recycling rate rose 3% from an average of 30.9% recorded between April 2006 and March 2007, the DEFRA figures claim, and the amount of waste sent to landfill decreased from 16.9 to 15.8Mt.

The best-performing regions for recycling were the East Midlands and the East of England, which achieved a 41% rate in 2007. London and the Northeast propped up the table with recycling rates of 25%.

Total municipal waste decreased by just under 300,000t in the year to end December 2007, down from 29.1Mt to 28.8Mt, or 1%. Waste minister Joan Ruddock said: ‘We still have some way to go before we are performing at the level of some of our nearest neighbours in Europe. But we are catching them up.’
