England's roads have been kept in check

Two recent survey reports reflected interesting news about the national road condition - the Department for Transport (DfT) statistics on national road conditions and the ALARM survey.

Both demonstrated evidence that despite the budget cuts the condition of the classified road network in England is not, as might have been expected, deteriorating rapidly but is keeping in check.

According to the DfT road condition statistics there has been a reduction of 1-2% in the proportion of the principle and non-principle road network that should be considered for maintenance. However not surprisingly the situation on the unclassified road network is not as rosy with a 3% increase.

According to the ALARM survey published in March the percentage of the road network in poor structural condition has fallen repeated over the last three years from 21% in 2012/13 to 18% in 2013/14 and down to 15% at the year end to March 2014/15.

So what are the reasons for this unexpected good news?
