Fly-tipping in England has fallen 9.3% in the last year, according to government statistics.
In 2008-09, there were 1.16m fly-tipping incidents dealt with by local authorities, down from 1.28m the previous year.
The estimated cost of clearing up illegally-dumped waste by councils was £54.9m over the year, and local authorities increased their enforcement actions by 3.9% to more than 520,000, including 2,000 prosecutions. Half of all fly-tips occurred on highways.
Environment minister, Huw Irranca-Davies, said: ‘I am pleased to see a reduction of more than 9% in incidents, but 1.16m is still too many.
‘Local authorities, government and people need to play their part in stopping it.’
