Engineers with big heads find Pennine’s way is best

Specialist ground engineering company Pennine has started work on preparing ground for the new M6 motorway link at Carlisle.
The Lancashire-based firm moved on site after being awarded the prestigious £1.4M contract by main contractor, Carillion. Over a 20-week period, the 24-man team will use up to three rigs to insert no fewer than 4,395 vibro concrete columns (VCCs) with enlarged heads over an area 12,484m2 at up to 90 columns a day.
The VCCs are necessary to strengthen the load bearing capacity of former moss land, comprising soft silt, peat and gravel. Work on the six-lane 9km M6 missing link between the motorways to the north and south commenced in July 2006.
