Engineers well placed to close the ‘Cumberland Gap’

The ‘Cumberland Gap’ is closing after the recent installation of a £5.2M bridge, which will carry the southbound carriageway of the M6 Carlisle to Guards Mill extension over the River Esk.
Engineers used cranes, cables and hydraulics to launch the 800t bridge across the river. The bridge was launched into position with the majority of the framework and reinforcement in position for the deck, thereby reducing the safety risks to construction workers when working at height over water, said project manager, Ziad El-Balbisi.
‘The structure was constructed on dry land and at ground level so access to carry out work such as steelwork painting could be carried out without the need for complex access arrangements over the river.’
