Engineers mingle with tourists to keep beach in order

A £1.4M project to safeguard a Devon seaside town gets under way next month. ~East Devon District Council~ said contractor Raymond Brown Construction Group would take on the project to secure sections of Exmouth’s seawall that have been undermined by movement of the beach around their foundations.

The scheme takes into account the predicted 6mm-a-year sea level rise. A spokesman for the engineering department said that while it was not ideal working during the tourist season, ‘we need quieter weather conditions and daylight’.

The feasibility of erecting an offshore breakwater, recharging the beach, or installing groynes will be investigated for the second phase. East Devon was working with neighbouring ~Teignbridge District Council~ to consider the impact of these proposals on other stretches of coastline.
