Energy-recovery plant approved

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council has approved plans for a multimillion-pound energy-recovery centre.

The borough’s planning committee gave unanimous backing for the North East Energy Recovery Centre (NEERC) proposal, submitted by Sita UK.

The NEERC will be capable of processing 256,000t of household and commercial waste, and produce 21MW of electricity, which it claims is sufficient power for all the homes in a town the size of Hartlepool.

John Grainger, Sita UK’s general manager in the Northeast, said: ‘This is great news. The approval is an enormous boost for the region and will help confirm the Tees Valley as a centre for energy recovery.’

There are also plans to include provision for a railhead to be built so that eventually the company would be able to transport waste by rail.
