End in sight as major Preston project draws to a close

An end to the worst disruption to Preston city centre in 20 years is in sight, according to the highways engineer in charge of the road network.

The relaying of water pipes and gas mains has caused traffic problems across the city, and at the heart of the disruption has been a £30M project to replace 12km of underground electricity cable. Shaun Capper, chief highways engineer for Preston at Lancashire County Council explained: ‘All the utilities have needed to carry out extensive work across the city, and the electricity project has been a very big job.’

Mr Capper said the utilities companies had been approached to carry out any work which needed doing before the city embarked on its Civitas project, the European-funded scheme that will establish more cycle lanes, increase public transport use and introduce incentives to encourage car sharing.

He continued: ‘It’s not been easy for the people of Preston, but by the end of the year, all the utlilities’ work should be done and then we can start on Civitas, which will make all this disruption worthwhile.’
