Emergency vehicles cause 2,000 accidents, reveals MP

New figures show that emergency vehicles have caused almost 2,000 accidents in the past five years in Northwest England alone, and that 80% of ‘blue light accidents’ are caused by police vehicles.

The figures, obtained by Liberal Democrat MP, Norman Baker, in a Commons answer, showed the Northwest had more emergency vehicle accidents than Scotland, Wales and London combined, and that 264 of them resulted in serious injury.

They also showed that Yorkshire and Humberside was another black spot, with more than 1,700 such accidents in the same period.

‘Emergency vehicles, rightly, have priority on the roads, and understandably need to reach their destination quickly. But these figures make it clear that much more needs to be done to make sure casualty levels are cut,’ said Baker.

Figures showed there were at least 2,000 such accidents a year in the UK, although the number was falling.
