Emergency response is an exercise in European union

A major international exercise to help European nations improve their response to massive coastal flooding was held throughout Europe last week.

Emergency command centres in the UK, Sweden, Holland and Ireland worked to co-ordinate a joined-up response to flooding from a simulated tsunami in another EU member state.

The exercise was prompted by the tidal surge which nearly overwhelmed flood defences on the UK’s east coast, Germany and Holland last November, and by the growing threat of rising sea levels caused by climate change.

Conducted last week by the EU FloodCommand programme, the exercise explored how emergency services and governments of European nations could co-ordinate resources to help a fellow EU nation cope with a tsunami.

Complex issues of how to prepare, deploy and co-ordinate emergency response forces such as helicopters and boats, were all explored during the exercise.
