Elgin marvel given planning approval

Moray Council has revealed that the £83m Elgin flood-defence scheme has received planning permission.

Part of Scotland’s largest flood-protection scheme, a final decision on the three-year construction plan will be made by Scottish ministers.

The plans were subject to a public inquiry held before the Scottish Government’s planning official, Michael Cunliffe, last month, following objections to the flood-prevention order. Mr Cunliffe is now set to make his recommendations to ministers.

The scheme will protect hundreds of homes and businesses from flooding from the River Lossie, and is part of a wider, £150m scheme in Moray. ‘Elgin has suffered devastating flooding. [The scheme] will take more than three years to construct,’ a council spokesman said.
