Elephant’s carbon footprint will blaze a trail across the capital

The £1.5bn regeneration of London’s Elephant and Castle has moved one step closer after Southwark Council last week selected a development partner for the scheme.

A consortium of Land Lease, First Base and Oakmayne will undertake the 10-year programme, which represents the capital’s largest-ever development by a single borough.

Plans for the 17-acre development include the removal of subways and the southern roundabout to create a more pedestrian- and cycle-friendly environment, two new public parks, and 6,000 homes.

The scheme will be carbon neutral, with a focus on renewable energies, including wind and solar power. Cllr Nick Stanton, leader of Southwark Council, said: ‘The Elephant will regain its potential and once again, become a jewel in London’s crown.’
