EU fears over road transport

The European Environment Agency fears that market forces are propelling road transport into an ever-strengthening position in the European Union freight market.
Lorries and vans are ‘generally faster, cheaper, more reliable and flexible when compared with other modes’, and its strengths play to the growing demand for just-in time delivery, especially given the pressure exerted by urban property prices on warehouse space.
Road transport’s share of European Union freight movements stands at 77%, up 3% since 1998, stymieing the EU objective stabilising the proportion at 1998 levels by 2010, it notes.
