EU commissioner backs UK request for flood aid

The UK’s application to the EU Solidarity Fund to help meet the costs of this year’s flooding has received a vote of confidence from the European commissioner.

On Wednesday, floods recovery minister, John Healey, met the European commissioner, Danuta Huebner, who confirmed that she was supporting the UK’s application and would recommend that the UK received around €160M.

‘We have worked extremely closely with the European Commission and I would like to thank its members for the speed at which they have been dealing with this important issue,’ Healey said.

‘I was grateful for the opportunity to put the UK’s case directly to Ms Huebner and thank her and the commission officials for their support and co-operation. The commissioner is well aware of the strong public and political concern in the UK at the widespread damage caused by the summer flooding.’
