EU budgets for disasters

The EU Council of Ministers has approved a £129.8M budget for coordinating the response of member states to disasters from 2007-2013, ranging from major flooding or hurricanes to landslides.
The system allows stricken local authorities to call – via national contact points – for help from experts and equipment supplied by other EU member states. This budget decision comes as ministers assess proposed changes to the current system, involving a ‘modular approach’ allowing specialist teams for specific emergencies to be identified ahead of a disaster.
