EA reports flooding progress but worries lurk under surface

Almost 12 months after last summer’s floods, the Environment Agency has reported on the progress it has made.

This includes completing 34 flood defences, inspecting 8,500km of protection, and spending £5M repairing damage.

The agency also reiterated its call for a national effort on surface water flooding involving local authorities, utilities and central government.

Chief executive, Paul Leinster, said the EA had faced a huge challenge responding to the floods along with its normal flood-risk programme.

‘We hope the recently-announced Floods Bill will resolve any confusions over roles and responsibilities for surface water flooding, with the EA having a strategic overview for all types of flood risk.’

He added it was vital people took responsibility for protecting themselves, as outlined in Sir Michael Pitt’s interim report, and identified the need for utilities to better protect key infrastructure in the face of climate change.

The full Lessons learned Pitt review is expected at the end of this month.
