Durham youngsters in plot to save the planet

Children in Durham are taking steps toward reducing their own ‘carbon footprint’ on their communities by devising ‘environmentally-friendly’ transport initiatives for journeys to school.
Youngsters at Bullion Lane Primary School and Belmont Infant School have developed their own transport plans in an effort to cut congestion and traffic emissions near their schools.
Year 5 pupils at Bullion Lane have set up a five-minute walking zone around their school, which encourages parents that drive children to school to park at least five minutes away from the gates.
They have also plotted every child’s postcode on to a map to show where pupils are travelling from on their school journey.
The school has received letters of support from Buckingham Palace, the prime minister’s office, and Mrs Doubtfire author Anne Fine.
Meanwhile, children at Belmont Infant School have recently started a walking bus with the help of the B&Q store in Durham – the first company to sponsor a walking bus in the country.
Parents are able to park in the company’s car park to start the walk to school in Buckinghamshire Road.
Both the school and B&Q Durham want to promote the benefits of sustainable forms of transport to staff, children and the local community.
