Durham County Council was crowned the overall winner at the EuroRAP, Surveyor and TEC Passive Safety Awards at Traffex.
EuroRAP chairman, John Dawson, said the local authority was recognised for its ‘high level of skills and commitment in the area’.
Don Waller, leader of the council’s accident investigation and prevention safety audit team, said: ‘Engineering is important but we do need enforcement. We have seen a noticeable decline in road deaths on our roads as a result of our work.’
Meanwhile, David Milne received a specialist award for his ‘tireless work in the field’.
Milne and the Passive Revolution have launched guidelines aimed at expanding the use of passive safe street furniture on to local authority roads. ‘The trunk roads picked up strongly on this subject but local authorities seem to be lagging behind. This is intended to help them in the area,’ he said, after receiving his award.
