Durham plans expansion as shoppers queue up to park and ride

Durham County Council is considering extending its park-and-ride service, due to soaring popularity.

Launched by the council in December 2005 in Durham City, the £10M service has seen an average monthly increase in passenger levels of 33% compared with last year. It has now carried a total of 1.2M passengers.

Additional park-and-ride sites are being considered in the Shincliffe and Stonebridge areas, together with a possible extension of the existing ones.

Cllr Bob Pendlebury, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said: ‘The scheme has been a huge success from the very start, and has been instrumental in reducing the volume of traffic entering the city, helping manage peak-hour traffic, increasing short-stay parking capacity in the city, and attracting more visitors and shoppers.’
