Dual approach to boost economy

A new report, commissioned by City of York Council, has urged the authority to dual the city’s northern ring road and work with neighbouring authorities to improve sustainable public transport links across the region.
As part of its vision for the city’s economy, which has been hit by recent job losses, the Future York Group report urges the council to work with neighbouring authorities and regional partnerships to adopt a ‘supportive and consistent’ transport strategy.
The council should collaborate with regional partners to secure funding for dualling the northern ring road, which would reduce congestion and provide access to key development sites, and to work on improving connectivity to at least one of three local airports, to ensure a maximum 45 minutes transfer time from the city. A collaborative approach should also be adopted to investigate options and funding mechanisms to improve sustainable public transport links to neighbouring towns and cities.
‘The importance of an effective transport system is crucial to the success of the economy, and transport is identified as the biggest constraint to economic growth,’ the report states.
‘Lack of investment in transport infrastructure will, therefore, have a detrimental impact, both on the York economy and its wider role within the region.’ The findings of the report will be considered by the council’s executive on 10 July. The council is expected to develop a series of action plans in response to the recommendations.
Bill Woolley, City of York Council’s director of city strategy, said: ‘We recognise the importance of the economy in ensuring a high quality of life for residents and businesses. We will need to consider the recommendations in detail, in order to develop action plans with clear, measurable targets.’
