Drivers take an original route to avoid danger of rock falls

The former A5 – the Thomas Telford-designed route replaced a decade ago by a better alignment – was due to reopen this week, as a temporary replacement for its successor.
Reopened after agreement was reached with landowners, the route will provide an alternative to a section of the 10-year-old road which will be closed for at least six months following the failure of anchors on a rock cutting that could have lead to tonnes of rubble falling on the carriageway (Surveyor, 8 June). The route will have a weight restriction of 7.5t and is subject to the outcome of ongoing tests on the retaining wall along its route. The Welsh Assembly had said it was working ‘24/seven’ on the problem.
Work on the failed section of the new A5 is due to start two weeks after the appointment of a contractor, expected this week.
