Drivers of most-polluting cars may face £25 fees

Plans to charge the most polluting cars £25 for entering the London congestion zone have gone out to consultation.

The move, announced by Ken Livingstone towards the end of last year (Surveyor, 16 November 2006), will also see the charge waived completely for the least-polluting cars – those in emission bands A and B. A MORI poll found 64% of Londoners thought the most polluting cars should pay a higher congestion charge.

The consultation is due to end in October and the mayor said he would keep an open mind on the proposals until he had read the results.

‘The highest CO2-emitting cars – like some of the so-called ‘Chelsea tractors’, high-powered sports cars and luxury executive cars – can produce twice as much carbon dioxide as the kind of car driven by the average Londoner,’ said Livingstone.
