Dramatic ‘ribbon’ development will set scene for Shakespeare

London’s famous Leicester Square, the busiest pedestrian footway in Europe, is to get an £18.5M revamp, including a unique ‘ribbon’ of seating and newly-landscaped gardens with the centre piece of its grade two-listed Shakespeare statue and fountain.

The nine side streets which act as gateways into Leicester Square will also be revamped, with some new and original decorative features. The public consultation, launched this week, ends on February 29, with implementation planned to start two months later. It should be completed by the end of 2010.
