Drain cover thefts top 200

Thieves have stolen 30 drain covers from roads in the Huntingdonshire and Fenland areas of Cambridgeshire, taking the total number stolen in the county over the last 18 months to 200.

Although the cast iron drains have little scrap value it costs some £100 to replace each one. Cambridgeshire’s divisional maintenace manager, Richard Kingston, said: ‘This is just mindless vandalism. Leaving a hole in the road especialy at night is highly dangerous. Taxpayers are also left footing the bill for these thieves.’
