Doors of opportuity for London councils

London boroughs should be at the centre of the capital’s door-to-door transport, says a new report to London Councils.

The cross-party organisation is setting up a project board to progress a strategy for boroughs to develop their own bus-based schemes, under agreements with Transport for London (TfL).

These could incorporate services for the NHS, with which TfL commissioner, Peter Hendy, said there was now ‘strategic engagement’. Savings from central procurement and booking could fund travel support programmes for elderly and disabled travellers.

TfL must also develop a more joined-up approach with the voluntary sector to meet older people’s travel needs, according to research for Age Concern London. Tackling accessibility barriers alone ‘will not be enough’, it says.
