Don’t turn off the tap for flower producers, pleads farmers’ union

 

The National Farmers’ Union has urged councils in southeast England to retain flower displays, despite the predicted drought this summer. The NFU is concerned about local authorities cancelling flower orders following drought-order applications made by Sutton and East Surrey Water, Southern Water and Mid Kent Water.

Richard Hirst, NFU horticulture chairman, urged smart use of water resources to allow bedding plants and hanging baskets, pointing to ~Guildford Borough Council~ 's plan to use water from a boating lake.
