Dishing the dirt on bad neighbourhoods

Litter and dog-fouling provide havens for anti-social behaviour and crime, and have a negative affect on people’s quality of life and sense of neighbourhood, according to research published by the Keep Britain Tidy campaign charity.

Detailed research carried out over the past four years for Encams has examined what people had to say about the issues affecting their quality of life, and to gauge their overall levels of satisfaction.

For some people, their neighbourhood was a place to escape to – while for others it was a place to escape from. Women reported being more satisfied with their quality of life than men, so, too, did those aged between 16-24 and 65-75, and people living in Yorkshire.

The research found that people’s sense of neighbourhood had a very direct bearing on their quality of life, and that positive or negative verdicts depended closely on how an area looked, the activities available to teenagers, if there was a sense of community, and the perceived or actual levels of anti-social behaviour.

Dr Fiona Campbell, director, Keep Britain Tidy said: ‘The top three things that are most important to having a good quality of life are a clean bill of health, having enough money for the basics, and enjoying relationships with family and friends.
