Discussions will help DfT navigate around latest legislation

The Department for Transport is consulting relevant commercial organisations, local authorities and safety groups on the best way to amend existing satellite navigation legislation.
The DFT’s In-Vehicle Information System Consultation says there is a need to review current legislation in light of the ever-expanding ‘sat-nav’ industry, which has more than 4M devices in use on UK roads. Aims of the consultation include ensuring the human-machine interface of the device is not unduly distracting and that routing algorithms favour the most appropriate roads.
The paper highlights the importance of ensuring sat-nav devices do not encourage the use of rat runs, whereby country lanes and villages are clogged up by motorists who are directed off main roads.
