Disabled group homes in on designs in zone areas

Recommendations on designing home zones to assist disabled people have been published by the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee.

The DPTAC research comments on ways of delineating pedestrian pathways without undermining the concept of shared space, and the importance of gateways identifiable by all users. It also highlights ways of siting crossing points, deployment of street furniture, and lighting to enhance a feeling of personal safety.

‘Understanding disabled people’s concerns and paying attention to the physical features can go shome way to addressing the concerns of disabled people,’ said Grahame Lawson, chair of DPTAC’s personal mobility and local government working group.

‘The research identifies how a generic approach to design features in a home zone can assist decisions which will improve the quality of life for everyone.’
