More than 3,000 young people will be taking the Construction and Built Environment diploma this September, Surveyor has learned.
Welcoming the news, the Civil Engineering Contractors’ Association said the total figure of 3,054 both exceeded expectations and provided a manageable platform to work from.
Joe Johnson, CECA director of training, said: ‘The ConstructionSkills target was 4,000, so a 75% success rate is very good news. In fact, had there been 4,000 or more entrants, it would have been difficult to provide training.’
'Employers have 30,540 work experience days to fill, and there is suitable provision to provide that,' he added.
He said ConstructionSkills would now seek a breakdown of consortia information, and on where there was limited employer engagement. And, although it was not too late to enrol, Johnson didn’t envisage change of more than 200 students. ‘It depends on GCSE results, but extra recruits will be negated by those who drop out.’
Around 20,000 people in total will be taking the new diplomas, the Department for Children, Schools and Families announced on Wednesday. But CECA had been told early on Wednesday that detailed figures would not be revealed until September, meaning employers were ‘still in the dark’ over how many students would be taking the Construction and Built Environment diploma.
