Dim outlook in prospect

Warwickshire is considering switching off its streetlights at night, in order to reduce energy costs by up to 40%.
The council’s streetlighting electricity bill currently stands at around £1.3M a year, and may rise by 30% when the current contract is re-let in 2007. In January, the county council cabinet will decide whether costs could be reduced by switching off all or some of its 50,000 lights.
