DfT considers going underground to improve Manchester links

The Government is considering building Britain’s first underground outside London for more than 30 years – in Manchester.

The Department for Transport has admitted that a tunnel linking the city’s Victoria and Piccadilly stations with a £500m underground – reviving the ‘Pic-Vic’ dream which died three decades ago – is under consideration.

Transport secretary, Ruth Kelly, a Greater Manchester MP, raised hopes in the Commons when she said: ‘I think in future, a sensibly-costed plan for Manchester, perhaps including linking Victoria and Piccadilly, could lead to more commuters being able to travel in greater comfort in and out every day.’
