DfT aims to cut red tape surrounding road projects

Local authority bureaucracy surrounding road engineering changes will be tackled, Jim Fitzpatrick MP, told a conference this week.

Speaking at the second Road Safety Expo conference this week, the parliamentary under secretary of state for transport, said: ‘We see road engineering as a key way forward, through measures such as central barriers, but also need to look at procedures for implementation and the bureaucracy around making the required changes.’

Fitzpatrick said the Government would be looking at the issue as part of its post-2010 Road Safety Strategy.

Andrew Howard, head of road safety for AA, questioned whether the current economic climate could lead to local authorities spending money normally reserved for road safety on other initiatives.

He said: ‘The Government says to local authorities that it hopes funding given will be used for road safety but most road safety money is not ring-fenced. It will be interesting to see what may happen in the future.’
