Councillors in Devon are demanding fairer funding to improve maintenance of the county’s roads, following last winter’s severe weather.
More than 36,000 defects have been fixed so far this year, already almost double the amount found during an average year.
Devon CC has unveiled a major £2m repair programme to fund 88 schemes throughout the county, and it is now awaiting approval of its bid for additional funding from the Government.
But cabinet member for highways and transportation, Cllr Stuart Hughes, wants minis ers to give a fairer share in its funding settlement.
‘Devon is responsible for the biggest road network in the country, so it is fundamentally wrong that we’re expected to maintain it with less funding from central government than other authorities,’ he said.
