Devon seeks direction on road signage

Devon County Council is looking into creating multi-lingual signs to help European HGV drivers.

The council is to produce a detailed report on the subject after Cllr John Clatworthy raised the issue of drivers using inappropriate roads on the advice of their satellite navigation systems. He suggested the council work with the Highways Agency and the County Councils Network to get the signs on the most problematic routes.

A Czech lorry was stuck in a country lane near Plymouth for three days after he was directed there by his sat nav system, he said. In August the Welsh Assembly approved a sign telling drivers to ignore sat nav systems that were suggesting unsuitable routes.
