Devon CC’s bridge repair programme retains supporting wall

Work to strengthen a retaining wall supporting a section of the South West coast path is underway as part of Devon County Council’s bridge repair programme.

The county stressed the challenges of the £305,000, 14-week job at the location taking the ‘full brunt’ of winds and seas off the Bristol Channel, but hoped to complete the work by mid-December.

Cllr Geoff Fowler said the section of the 630-mile coastal path was ‘vital’ to the economy of his ward of Ifracombe. Installing ground anchorages, mini-piles, reinforced concrete and rebuilding a masonry parapet would secure the path ‘for years to come’, he stressed.
