Devil’s in the detail as £371M upgrade will complete A3 link

The Government is committing £371M to replace the last-remaining single-carriageway section of the A3 with a dual carriageway.

Plans include the construction of a twin bore tunnel under the Devil’s Punchbowl in Surrey.
The tunnel has been designed to minimise the impact on the local environment, and the scheme will include several underpasses to allow horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians to cross the new A3 in safety. The Devil’s Punchbowl is a large hollow overlooked by the Gibbet Hill, the second-highest hill in the county.
Transport minister Stephen Ladyman said the project would also enable Portsmouth to have its own dual carriageway link to the M25, ‘improving opportunities for the business community’.
Initial environmental works will begin in January 2007 and the main scheme works in April 2008, with the tunnel expected to be open to motorists in 2011.
