Devil of a job, but road tunnel will be longest on land in UK

Work has started on creating the longest road tunnel under land in the UK as part of the A3 Hindhead scheme.

The £370M project will dual the last remaining section of single carriageway on the A3, as well as create a tunnel to carry the 30,000 vehicles a day which pass through the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The tunnel will remove all traces of the existing road from the landscape, which includes Devil’s Punchbowl. Transport secretary, Ruth Kelly, said: ‘The new tunnel will bury the road deep beneath this protected landscape and ease congestion at this notorious bottleneck – improving journeys on the vital Portsmouth to London route.’
