‘Defeated’ agency quits bypass inquiry

Campaigners have welcomed the Highways Agency’s decision to pull out of the controversial Mottram-Tintwistle bypass public inquiry.

The decision comes after the regional leaders forum, 4NW, informed theDepartment for Transport that it wanted to defer the scheme to beyond 2015 (Surveyor, 5 March 2009). The bypass would have gone through the Peak District National Park.

The agency’s withdrawal was announced by its major projects director, Nirmal Kotecha. Campaign for Better Transport spokesman, Richard George, said: ‘The Highways Agency has had 18 months to make the case for the road. That it has finally admitted defeat should send a clear signal that there is neither the need nor the political will for the scheme.’
