The declining workload of Scotland’s civil engineers has slowed to its lowest level since the start of the economic downturn, according to a new survey.
The Civil Engineering Contractors’ Association workload trend survey for the first quarter of 2009 revealed a slowdown in the rate of decline.
CECA said this represented a more positive outlook for repair and maintenance work across the sector. However, the trend for new orders is still following a ‘downward trajectory, reflecting patterns across the UK’.
Alan Watt, chief executive of CECA Scotland, said the results showed the recession had taken a ‘very deep hold’ on Scotland’s civil engineering industry.
‘The survey’s results show the recent fiscal stimulus package is yet to be seen on the ground. Workload has been hit very hard recently, and the outlook is not positive until 2012 – and looks bleak beyond then.
‘The Scottish Government has produced a programme of works for future infrastructure. It must now hold its nerve and deliver this programme and the investment in infrastructure Scotland requires.’
