Fife council has become the first local authority in Britain to sign up to a voluntary framework aimed at halving the amount of construction waste sent to landfill.
The council has followed in the footsteps of a number of leading construction players in committing to WRAP’s (Waste & Resources Action Programme) Halving Waste to Landfill pledge.
The commitment is designed to achieve a 50% reduction in construction, demolition and excavation waste sent to landfill sites, and has the support of the Scottish Executive.
Cllr Tony Martin, chair of the council’s environment, enterprise and transportation committee, expressed his delight at signing the commitment, and said he was confident the targets would be met.
‘We have set ourselves the goal of becoming the leading green council in Scotland, and signing up to the commitments is another demonstration of our drive to achieving this ambitious target.
‘The council is one of the biggest building and construction organisations in Fife, and we have a duty to make our operations as sustainable as possible, and also lead by example.’ The cabinet secretary for rural affairs and the environment, Richard Lochead, said Fife was ‘leading the way for other Scottish local authorities’.
‘The council’s involvement has great potential for making a difference, both through its own activities and influencing those of its contractors. Everyone must play their part in reducing waste, and only by all working together in this way will we be able to achieve a zero waste Scotland.’
Last year, the Scottish Executive launched a target for 40% of municipal waste to be recycled or composted by 2010. This will rise to 50% in 2013 and again to 60% by 2020.
