Streetscene services in
South Gloucestershire give residents good value for money, but infrequent highway checks and poor streetlighting are putting them and their council at risk.
The
~Audit Commission~ finding comes in an inspection report giving the unitary authority a good ‘two-star’ rating for the service, which has ‘promising prospects for improvement’.
South Gloucestershire boasts high standards of cleanliness, despite a comparatively low spend, and public satisfaction with street cleaning is high. But performance compares less favourably with similar authorities for footway maintenance and streetlighting, although the standard is improving.
More than 65% of street lights are at least 25 years old, and ‘there have already been collapses’, the report notes.
